Gut sechs Wochen ist der E-Book Reader Kindle jetzt bei mir. Zeit für eine kurze Zwischenbilanz, denn am kommenden Montag werde ich eine Präsentation über die zukünftige Chancen dieser Geräte halten.

In den vergangenen Wochen musste ich immer wieder an meinen ersten iPod denken. Die Frage für die Präsentation ist denn auch: „Can e-book readers become the iPod for books?“

Dazu lohnt sich zuerst ein Blick auf die Geschichte von MP3 und dem iPod. Ich kann mich noch gut an meine erste Reportage erinnern. Aus heutiger Sicht war MP3 vor der Einführung des iPods:

• ein ziemlich männliches Nerd-Thema. Bei der Umwandlung der ersten CD’s waren noch unterschiedliche Software-Anwendungen (Ripper, Encoder…) nötig
• dementsprechend sahen auch die Player aus.

Warum es der iPod trotzdem zum Lifestyle-Produkt geschafft hat? Da gibt es aus meiner Sicht eine ganze Reihe von Gründen. Mir sind folgende besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben:

• Design: Haptik und Usability waren vollkommen neu und wurden im Gegensatz zu den unförmigen Nerd-Playern auch schnell von Frauen akzeptiert.
• Clevere Lösungen: iTunes ermöglichte kinderleichtes Konvertieren und der Shop war eine echte Innovation für legale Downloads.
• Kostenlose Inhalte: Gleichzeitig verlief der Siegeszug des iPods auch parallel zum Erfolg von Filesharing Plattformen wie Napster. Dadurch war jede Menge kostenloses Material für die riesigen Speicher vorhanden.

Wenn ich nun heute auf meinen Kindle von Amazon schaue, dann kommen mir gewisse Parallelen in den Sinn:

• Design: Haptik und Usability des Kindles sind überzeugend.
• Clevere Lösungen: Die kostenlose und unabhängige Software Calibre ermöglicht einfaches Management und Konvertieren von E-Books. Gleichzeitig finde ich den Amazon Kindle Shop mit der drahtlosen Übertragung auch sehr praktisch.
• Kostenlose Inhalte: Klar gibt es auch hier wieder illegale Raubkopien im Netz. Doch wer braucht das, wenn Websites wie das Projekt Gutenberg jede Menge Qualitätsinhalte kostenlos anbieten.

Natürlich gibt es auch eine ganze Menge Unterschiede:

• Schon die pure Menge im Konsum von Büchern und Musik ist vollkommen unterschiedlich.
• Musik hören wir in anderen Situationen und an anderen Orten.
• Bücher spielen eine ganz andere Rolle für unsere Bildung.
• Für den eingeschworenen Leser eines Buches zählt auch das Rascheln des Papiers beim Blättern und das Bücherregal in der Wohnung.

Nach den guten Erfahrungen in den vergangenen Wochen glaube ich persönlich an einen schnellen Erfolg der E-Book Reader. Schon heute liefert Amazon-Boss Jeff Bezos im Interview mit der New York Times eine ganz erstaunliche Zahl: „For every 100 copies of a physical book we sell, where we have the Kindle edition, we will sell 48 copies of the Kindle edition.“

What technology is used?
You don’t need a PC or a smart phone to read an e-book. The e-ink technology on devices like Amazon’s Kindle or Sony’s PRS 700 provides a new electronic reading possibility. The screen is not illuminated and hence resembles paper. Up to now the readers with e-ink have a black-and-white display.

How many books can I store on an e-book reader?
A Kindle 2 holds up to 1′500 books.

How many e-book readers are used worldwide?
The e-reader industry doesn’t publish too many facts and figures. North America, where Amazon started the Kindle sales two years ago, is ahead. According to an article published by The Washington Post on 5 November experts predict that ten million people will be carrying e-­readers by the end of 2010.

What is the battery life of an e-book reader?
Your Kindle allows you to read for up to one week on a single charge with wireless on. Wireless is just needed for updates or if you want to buy a book. If you switch off wireless the international Kindle works much longer.

How heavy is such an e-reader?
The Kindle for instance weighs 290 grams.

Where can I buy books for an e-book reader?
Sony and Amazon have their own shops. Amazon delivers books wirelessly in less than 60 seconds.

Is there free content for e-book readers?
There is a lot of free content.

Nomen nest omen. Can e-readers only read books?
No. You now find the first e-editions of newspapers and magazines in the Kindle store. In addition, you can set up subscriptions to blog or other content with full RSS-feeds on special websites.

Is there a common e-book format like mp3 for audio?
Unfortunately there is not one format like mp3. Epub is an open format that is used by Sony. Amazon has its own format that is called Mobipocket.

How complicated are e-book readers?
Amazon’s international Kindle edition has a wonderful usability. The wireless transfer of books or a connection via USB and your PC is quite easy.

Is there software like iTunes to manage and convert your content?
Amazon and Sony don’t offer such software. But for Calibre there is a very powerful open source software that helps you with the conversion and management of your e-books.

What other devices can be used to read e-books?
It’s possible to read e-books on your PC, smart phones or tablet PC.

Let me say this first: I am definitely not a fan of the Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer.
When I was working for a German internet service provider, our chief marketing officer thought that showing us a clip of how Steve whips up the people at Microsoft would be a good motivator.

I wasn’t motivated. I was just shocked.

This moment fixed my picture of Ballmer for the eternity. So I was really surprised when I saw an article on paidcontent.org this morning discussing Ballmer’s speech at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

The same crazy jumping Ballmer that shocked me some years ago said one of the most interesting things I have read about the financial crisis in traditional media in the last weeks:

“I don’t think we are in a recession, I think we have reset,” he said. “A recession implies recovery [to pre-recession levels] and for planning purposes I don’t think we will. We have reset and won’t rebound and re-grow.” Ballmer, named media person of the year at this year’s festival, also painted a bleak picture for the future of traditional media, arguing that newspaper publishers have failed to generate new revenues from the digital opportunity. He said that within 10 years all traditional content will be digital“

I have seen a lot of boring articles about Google killing quality journalism in the last months. Some people were asking if media should be the next industry that has to be supported by the governments. There are still a lot of tradional media companies praying that the hypothesis of Wolfgang Riepl stays true. He said in 1913 that „new media never make the old media disappear“.

We need traditional media to understand the most important questions in international relations, security and foreign policy. Of course we are impressed by the possibilities of the internet and the rising influence of social media like blogs, Facebook or Twitter. Yes, these days the Tweets from Iran are amazing. But as my colleague Rashunda Tramble mentioned in the ISN Blog: „Tweetable doesn’t automatically mean reliable.“

Therefore I should probably rethink my picture of Steve Ballmer. Maybe a jumping, stomping and yelling man is needed to wake up traditonal media and save their important role in our understanding of international relations and foreign policy.

2009 war bisher nicht mein Blogger-Jahr. Gut ein Jahr nach dem ersten Blog-Beitrag ist es deshalb Zeit für eine Pause. Dieser Blog wird vorerst nicht mehr aktualisiert.

Heute schon nachgeschaut, was Google über Dich weiss? Manchmal schadet das wirklich nicht. Ganz neu ist die Diskussion zum Thema Online-Reputation nicht.  Es macht sich einfach nicht gut, wenn die Personalabteilung ihren Bewerber wegen aussagekräftiger Partyfotos schon vor der Einstellung als Kampftrinker identifiziert. Eigentlich sollte das inzwischen  jeder mal gehört haben.

Doch auch ohne ausschweifenden Lebenswandel lohnt es sich mal zu fragen: Was weiss Google über mich? Die private Handynummer, eine Beziehung mit einer Frau namens Claudia, Claudias Telefonnummer im Büro, die Vergangenheit in einer Rockband… Der 29jährige Franzose Marc L. war ganz offenbar etwas unvorsichtig mit seinen persönlichen Daten im Netz. Deshalb hat das französische Magazin “Le Tigre“ mit ihm eine gleichermassen faszinierende wie erschreckende journalistische Darstellungsform erfunden:  “Das Google-Portrait.”

In diesem Portrait erfährt der Leser Dank offener Einträge in Flickr und Facebook eine ganze Menge über Marc L***. Inzwischen hat Marc alle seine Einträge gelöscht. Nach einer Meldung der französischen Nachrichtenagentur AFP will “Le Tigre” aber auch in Zukunft solche Google-Portraits veröffentlichen.

Wer keine Lust auf Portraits in französischen Magazinen hat, sollte sich bei Facebook in der Rubrik “Settings” mal ganz in Ruhe den Bereich “Privacy Settings” anschauen.  Sowas gibt es auch in den meisten anderen Social-Media-Angeboten.

Es wäre so schön. Mit einem einfachen Klick könnte YouTube die ganze Online-Welt der Tagsezeitungen im Web verändern. Wäre es nicht praktisch, wenn jede Tageszeitung auf ihrer Webseite einfach einen Player integrieren könnte und passend zu jeder Story auch eines der unzähligen Videos von YouTube veröffentlichen könnte? Wer sich mal die Mühe macht und mit einem Juristen über dieses Thema redet, lässt das schnell sein. Denn schon in den Nutzungsbedingungen steht:

„You agree not to use the Website, including the YouTube Embeddable Player for any commercial use, without the prior written authorization of YouTube. Prohibited commercial uses include any of the following actions taken without YouTube’s express approval:

• sale of access to the Website or its related services (such as the Embeddable Player) on another website;
• use of the Website or its related services (such as the Embeddable Player), for the primary purpose of gaining advertising or subscription revenue„

Wäre spannend zu wissen, wie die US-Anwälte reagieren, wenn Sie sehen, welche Schweizer Newsportale mit Banner-Werbung so alles YouTube-Videos syndizieren und neben ihren Artikeln integrieren.  Im vergangenen Jahr hat mich auch mal ein Jurist darauf aufmerksam gemacht, dass die „Terms of Use“ vieler Angebote im Web 2.0 eigentlich nur für den Gebrauch von Privatpersonen gemacht sind. Das heisst, dass sich Medienhäuser dann sowieso nicht auf diese „Terms of Use“ berufen können, wenn sie bei der Nutzung eines solchen Dienstes irgendwelche Copyrights verletzen. Zu Risiken und Nebenwirkungen bei Content-Syndizierung im Web 2.0 fragen Sie also besser den Anwalt ihres Vertrauens.

Trotzdem sollte YouTube nicht aus dem Blickwinkel von Tageszeitungsmachern verschwinden. In den USA haben die Verlage längst die Marketing-Power dieser Plattform erkannt. Wer seine eigenen Newsvideos zusätzlich noch über YouTube anbietet scheint einen echten Vorteil zu haben.
